`Disclose all Indo-Russian correspondence on Netaji`

New Delhi, Aug 16: The Central Information Commission (CIC) has asked the External Affairs Ministry to disclose its correspondence with the erstwhile USSR over the disappearance of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose.

"The Commission feels that if the material could be made available to the Justice Mukherjee Commission for inquiry into the disappearance of Netaji, there is no reason why this material should not be disclosed to any researcher now," Information Commissioner O P Kejariwal said.

The Commission made this observation while hearing Delhi- based organisation Mission Netaji`s plea for certified copies of the complete correspondence between India and the USSR over Netaji`s disappearance in 1945.

The CIC, in its decision, relied on a letter from officials in Moscow that said the documents which were handed over to India were meant for "official use and for the work of the Mukherjee Commission in its investigation into the disapperence of Netaji".

"Now the work of Mukherjee Commission is over. The Information Commission, therefore, is all for the disclosure of this material to the appellant," Kejariwal said.

It, however, advised the external affairs ministry to seek a formal clearance from Russian authorities in this regard.

Responding to Mission Netaji`s application filed in August last year, the ministry had denied the information on ground that its disclosure would affect India`s relationship with Russia.
